IPL 2023: Virat Kohli returns to RCB captaincy, hits 59 against PBKS

Virat Kohli marked his return as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore with his fourth fifty of the IPL 2023 season against Punjab Kings on Thursday.

Kohli had got off to a brilliant start to the IPL 2023 season with a match-winning knock against Mumbai Indians in RCB’s opening match and only had rare failures against KKR and CSK.

The star batter was handed the reins for the match against PBKS with Faf du Plessis carrying a rib injury which he had sustained during the loss against CSK, and unable to take the field in the second innings against PBKS in Mohali.

This was the first time Kohli had taken over the role as skipper of the franchise after stepping down following the conclusion of the 2021 IPL season.

Kohli got off to a strong start early on as Faf du Plessis took time to get going. The star batter was playing his shots freely and hit two boundaries off Arshdeep Singh’s second over.

Du Plessis would also come into the action and the duo put on 59 runs in the powerplay overs. The South African took over from Kohli at that point in terms of the acceleration and got to his fifty.

While Du Plessis started to be the aggressor in the innings, Kohli took a backseat and started to be more conservative with his innings. The Indian star batter got to his fifty off 40 balls and hit a boundary off Arshdeep to reach the landmark.

Kohli would look to put his foot on the pedal and hit a six against Nathan Ellis. However, his innings would come to an end in unfortunate fashion as his attempt at a sweep shot was caught by Jitesh Sharma off the bowling of Harpreet Brar. Kohli was dismissed for 59 off 47 balls and his innings consisted of five boundaries and one six.
